Southsea Cinema News

Southsea Cinema and Arts Centre, 31 January – 4 March 2025

Southsea Cinema and Arts Centre is delighted to present an extraordinary exhibition of lithographic prints by Lawrence Gleadle, a talented lithographic artist from the 1930s who earned the nickname “The Big-Head Man” for his intricate and detailed portraits of stars and advertising characters. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view beautifully restored samples of his work alongside one of the original prints, preserved in archives for their historical significance.

The exhibition opens on Friday, 31 January, with a special talk hosted by Goff Gleadle, Lawrence’s son. Drawing from his extensive research, Goff will share the fascinating history of these prints and provide insights into the world of stone lithography from the artist’s perspective. Copies of his research book will be available for purchase, offering an in-depth exploration of this lost art form. These prints, lost for nearly 80 years, have been meticulously restored to preserve their unique quality. Visitors will also have the chance to purchase prints during the exhibition.

The exhibition runs from 31 January to 4 March 2025. Don’t miss this opportunity to rediscover an extraordinary artistic legacy and hear the untold story behind these historic works.
