Southsea Cinema & Arts Centre, Portsmouth
Southsea Cinema & Arts Centre is proud to present a new exhibition by Portsmouth-born artist Connie (Hennessy Design), celebrating a milestone year as she approaches her third decade with a deeply personal and expressive body of work.
Rooted in abstract, freehand practice, Connie’s work is instinctive, unfiltered, and emotionally driven. Often described as spiritual, her paintings emerge without rigid planning — guided instead by intuition, movement, and the unpredictability of the creative moment.
An Authentic Visual Language
For Connie, art is not about perfection, but about honesty.
Her practice reflects a life shaped by change and inconsistency — a rhythm that translates into ever-evolving compositions where no two pieces are the same. Each work captures a moment of energy, emotion, and response to the world around her.
“Nothing is perfect, and neither is my art — because it’s real, original, and completely freehand.”
Inspired daily by life, surroundings, and the art she encounters, Connie embraces spontaneity. Trial and error are essential parts of her process, allowing each piece to grow organically into something unique.
A key element of Connie’s work is her passion for upcycling and renewal. She often paints over discarded canvases and forgotten objects, transforming them into vibrant new artworks.
This process reflects a deeper philosophy — that creativity can reshape, reimagine, and give new life to what might otherwise be overlooked.
Born with astigmatism and impaired vision, Connie has developed a unique sensitivity to perception and beauty. Her work invites audiences to reconsider how they see the world — to find inspiration in imperfection and creativity in the everyday.
A Local Story
Born in Portsmouth and shaped by her upbringing on the Isle of Wight, Connie has found a strong connection to Southsea’s community, history, and creative spirit. This exhibition is both a personal celebration and a reflection of her roots.
Connie (Hennessy Design) is a Portsmouth-based abstract artist working with freehand, intuitive techniques. Her practice explores spontaneity, transformation, and emotional expression through paint and mixed surfaces.
