Tactile Music Ritual

16–18 April | 20:00–21:30
Southsea Cinema & Arts Centre, Portsmouth
This April, Southsea Cinema & Arts Centre welcomes the return of Sub_Bar with its groundbreaking second edition — Sub_Bar Show #2 — an immersive performance experience where music is not simply heard, but physically felt.
Towards the end of 2021, Sub_Bar introduced a radical new way of experiencing sound: not through melody or lyrics, but through air pressure and low frequencies that travel through the body. What began as a physical ritual in Berlin and Lisbon evolved into an international format presented in 25 cities worldwide. Sub_Bar Show #1 marked the debut of this bold concept and was later nominated for the German Music Critics Award (VUT Indie Award).
Alongside its performances, Sub_Bar established the Sub_Bar Academy, where rising Deaf talents trained with internationally recognised artists. Alumni have gone on to perform at major stages including ADE Festival (Amsterdam), Silent Green (Berlin), and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Serralves (Porto).
Now, Sub_Bar Show #2 deepens the journey.

Curated and shaped around the works and narratives of Grischa Lichtenberger (Raster, DE) and Portuguese Deaf artist Iruenia, the second edition expands the tactile music language developed through Sub_Bar and the Academy. The show blends sign language, subtitles, immersive sound visualisations, and powerful low-frequency compositions into a 90-minute ritual for the body.
Featuring works for low frequencies by Daisuke Ishida, Doron Sadja, Akkamiau, Myles de Bastion, Byetone, Calvin Khan, Alexander Tillegreen, Felicity Mangan, Senaida, Jordan GCZ, Östrol, Sofia Balbontin, Filipe Baptista, Roberto Musci, and Martine-Nicole Rojina, the performance brings together leading international artists exploring sound beyond traditional listening.
Presented in various sign languages and translated into International Sign and subtitles, Sub_Bar Show #2 creates a shared physical field where Deaf and hearing audiences experience sound together — equally, viscerally, and collectively.
This is not a concert.
This is sound as sensation.
