A Journey Between Two Worlds
Southsea Cinema & Arts Centre is proud to present “Voices of Origin”, a solo exhibition by Salvadoran artist Raquel Bolaños, whose vivid, geometric compositions reflect her personal journey from El Salvador to the United Kingdom.
In this striking collection, Raquel transforms memories, landscapes, and traditions from her homeland into bold, abstract visual stories. Each piece celebrates the resilience and beauty of cultural identity — a vibrant dialogue between the past and the present, the familiar and the new.
Artist Statement – Raquel Bolaños
“I am Raquel, a Salvadoran woman, wife, mother, architect, and painter. My journey began when the violence in my country forced me to leave behind my roots, my loved ones, and the landscapes that saw me grow.
Arriving in the United Kingdom was a rebirth — a new beginning filled with challenges, but also with hope and gratitude. However, there is an invisible bond that ties me to El Salvador. I miss its light, its vibrant colors, its traditions, and its hardworking and resilient people.
Through painting, I have found a way to keep that connection alive. Each stroke, each color, and each form becomes a bridge between my two worlds: the one I left behind and the one that now embraces me.”
Her series “Voices of Origin” invites visitors to “listen” to the stories that live within warm tones and rhythmic forms — stories of resilience, joy, and the enduring connection to home.

About the Artist
Raquel Bolaños is an architect and visual artist from El Salvador, now based in the United Kingdom. Her work combines modernist structure with Latin American warmth, using color and form to explore memory, migration, and identity. “Voices of Origin” is her first solo exhibition in Portsmouth.
