“Voices of Origin”

Southsea Cinema News

Southsea Cinema & Arts Centre is proud to host Alchemy of Art: “Voices of Origin” on December 19th, an extraordinary evening of flamenco, paintings, and live instrumental music.

This event, a collaboration between Bailando with Sally and Art by Raquel, explores the profound connections between art and the migration experience, transforming personal journeys into universal stories of resilience, identity, and cultural pride.

Alchemy of Art invites attendees to a celebration of Spanish and Latin American traditions, where art becomes a bridge between personal narratives and collective memory. Experience an immersive journey into the vibrant interplay of culture and creativity.

The event, the doors open on 18:00 and it will start by 19:00pm until 19:45pm, the ticket price is £5 per person and the attendees can get the tickets online or on the door.

“Bailando with Sally” is all about using dance to heal and tell stories. Created by Sally Zurita, who’s also the co-creator of “Alchemy of Art: Voices of Origin”, the project brings personal experiences to life through movement. For this event, Sally shares her own journey as a migrant, showing how dance can express emotions words can’t always capture.

“Art by Raquel” features the vibrant paintings of Raquel, who pours her love for El Salvador into her work. Her art tells the story of leaving her hometown for safety and building a new life in the UK, all while holding on to her roots and pride in her culture.

To end the event, there will be a special performance by Jacqueline and Norman, a talented sibling duo. Through their beautiful melodies, they’ve always found a way to express themselves and connect with others. It’s the perfect way to wrap up an evening full of art, culture, and personal stories.

Sally Zurita

Founder of Bailando with Sally

I am Sally, a girl who in 2006 said goodbye to my beloved land of Bolivia, with a suitcase full of dreams and holding the hand of my mother, but always my home in my heart. After about 14 years in Spain, I packed my bags again and arrived here, to the United Kingdom, I don’t know if with the same dreams, but with great enthusiasm. I guess I compare the hope of the migrant with love, loving as if you have never had your heart broken, the hope of the migrant is the same, getting excited as if you have never been disappointed. And here we continue dreaming.

I’m a journalist, I’m a dancer, I’m a mental health support worker and, among others, I’m the creator of “Bailando with Sally”. My professional and vocational experience and my passion for dance asked me for a project for everyone, a project in which I can bring music and dance to each person, because dance has always been my therapy, my return to earth, my return home. A project dedicated to my wings, that lead me to fulfill dreams but also return me home. And today I dream of sharing what has helped me so much, heals me and fills me with everyone who can dance with me.

Raquel Bolaños

Founder of Art by Raquel

I am Raquel Bolaños. For security reasons I had to leave my country El Salvador, along with my husband and three children, looking for a new beginning, we arrived in the United Kingdom. After 2 years of waiting, we obtained our residency, at that moment I began my normal life.

It hasn’t been easy, but I am grateful for the opportunity to have a new life and to share it with so many wonderful people.

I am an architect and art has always accompanied me, allowing me to express my feelings. Which are reflected in my paintings, through the colors, the shapes, the lines that allow me to show how beautiful my country is. My work reflects the love and pride I feel when remembering my land.

Jacqueline and Norman

Musicians and singer

We are Salvadoran siblings, Jacqueline and Norman López.

Our relationship with music is from the first years of nursery school.

Musical rhythms have been present as we grew up throughout our lives, participating in different children’s orchestras and youth musical groups in our beloved country El Salvador.

In 2020 sadly, we had to leave our country with our family for safety reasons. At the beginning the adaptation process was very difficult, however little by little the rhythm of music began to beat again in our lives and in our community, we are enjoying making music and sharing life with beautiful melodies that allow us to express our feelings.

This unforgettable evening is not just an artistic event but a celebration of identity, belonging, and the stories that connect us all.  Entry: £5
